Cooking on the Dryer Tub Incinerator

Hot-Dog-Incinerator

A few months ago I wanted to buy a fire pit.  Fire pits are very useful to have around and it’s fun cooking on them.  My kids are smores addicts.  ok….I’m the smores addict.  I saw somewhere that you can turn an old dryer tub into a firepit.  I figured…better to build one/freecycle something than to pay out of pocket.  This worked out perfectly since about a year ago I found an old dryer being thrown away that I wanted to see if I could fix.  Since it was not economically fixable, I decided to use it for parts. I salvaged the motor, blower, and tub. (more on the motor/blower in a future post)

Turns out the tub works more like an incinerator than a fire pit.  It reduces wood to ashes faster than I  say “Kids, go get more wood!”  I believe this is a direct correlation to the vast amount of drain holes in a dryer.  I find it amazing, the lack of ashes this thing produces.  This leads me to believe that the fire is hot enough to burn like a rocket stove, incinerating the volatile gases in addition to almost all the physical material.

Today I’m cleaning the garage out and I have a ton of cutoff lumber that are too small to use in projects. Instead of wasting this good fuel, lets try cooking w/ it.  Since this is attempt number 1 at cooking off grid, I went with hot dogs since they are easy and dang near impossible to ruin.   Grabbed an old dutch oven that my wife said i could have since it was no longer suitable for cooking in the kitchen, cleaned it up.  Ran a boiling water test.  SUCCESS!!  Hot dog time!  My children seem to think they even taste better over the fire.

Here is a small video showing it in action.

Make your own Calcium Supplement Pills!

Calcium Pills Item List

Those of you who know me personally know I am big on self sufficiency.  I’ve never understood the concept of grumbling or complaining to someone about the fact that I don’t have something when I could go out and get it myself.  The more things I can accomplish on my own the happier I am.  That being said this idea came to me by “accident”.  I was headed to work and I had gotten an egg sandwich from a local food place.  While eating I crunched down on an eggshell.  If you’ve ever found an eggshell in your sandwich then you know it ruins the entire experience.  Instead of getting upset this time I thought, “Oh well, more calcium for me.”  Then it clicked…wait…we feed our chickens egg shells to boost their calcium intake…why can’t WE eat the eggshells?  I realized the only problem is the horrible texture and crunchiness.  Well not a problem for me, just change the format, after all I’ve done it before!

10 months ago my wife had our 5th child.  She expressed an interest in placenta pills.  If you don’t know what placenta pills are click here. Placenta Pills Research   She might as well have issued me a challenge.  I took it upon myself to make this a reality for her.  Since I already had the tools, might as well make calcium pills.  I did my research, there were no contraindications and it is an excellent source of calcium. Eggshell Calcium Pills Research

Here is how i did it.

Step 1 – Gather Materials

Keep in mind, this is how I chose to do it, there are many different ways to accomplish the same steps.  Use your imagination if you are missing something.

1. Eggshells.  (organic eggs are best and making pills offsets the extra costs)

2. Pot of boiling water. (to sterilize the egg shells)

3. Blender, coffee grinder or similar. (to reformat the shells)  I used the

4. Food Dehydrator. (can’t make pills in wet form) Food Dehydrators

5. Pill maker. (umm…durr) I use the Cap-M-Quik Capsule Filling Complete Starter Kit size 00 (includes Filling Machine, Tamper, and 1000 Empty GELATIN Capsules)

6. Gel caps (you can get veggie pills if you like)

7. Piggy bank. (to collect the savings)  *author note* if you choose to skip this step feel free to send the savings to me.

Step 2 – Boil egg shells

This step is critical to sterilize the shells and kill any baddies that you do not want to consume.

Step 3 – Dehydrate egg shells

Place the egg shell “membrane side” facing down on the dehydrator and dry those suckers out.  *author note*  This process smelled WAY better this time around than when I made the placenta pills.

Step 4 – Reformat the egg shells into powder

Stuff as many egg shells into the blender and 50 seconds later you have successfully eliminated the crunchy problem. *author note* Many people can stop here if they wish to mix the calcium powder directly into food or drinks.

Step 5 – Fill the pills!

Follow instructions on your particular pill jig/machine and make your pills.  I found that 18 egg shells yielded me exactly 101 pills.  Each pill is approximately 1000mg of calcium carbonate.
